Doing what I love is one thing. Doing what I love for a cause is another. I’m so proud to be a part of the 2nd Annual Party in Pink Zumbathon! I am challenging everyone I know to not only come to the amazing Zumba “Super” class but bring a friend or family member! My goal is to double our numbers from last year!

Zumba changes lives. It’s not an over statement. It’s not being overly dramatic. It is true.
I’m lucky enough to teach Zumba Fitness several times per week. I come in contact with many people. Some of the same people at each class. Many new faces at each class. I love the variety!
What is universal at each class? The comments.
I hear these things:
I can’t dance
I can’t move my hips
I wish I could do that
THEN…from the same or other people
You’ve changed my life
I’m addicted to Zumba
I get so happy during your class I think I’m going to cry (Where have you been by the way, J?)
I see transformations physically in people. I also see people emotionally change. Confidence, swagger, creativity, empowerment. It is AMAZING to experience. I’m so lucky and blessed to be able to say that I’m a teacher. I learn from my class daily.
A senior woman told me she is off all four medications since taking my class for a while! She looks like a teenager! Her body rocks!
A woman asked me today what diet I did to lose 30lbs. When I told her it was ALL Zumba she was surprised. Not only can you burn 1000 calories in a class, and I believe we get up there, I think that when you find pure joy and happiness in something that you are doing your body responds.
Of course I love hearing the feedback and positive comments but what I love MORE is seeing a friend of mine, recently divorced mom of two little ones, come ALIVE in class! Or seeing a girl who I never knew before move from the middle of the room to the front with a huge smile on her face – and who now calls me her friend.
I love seeing my husband creatively coming up with his own moves while telling me I kicked his ass!
I love seeing my sweet little friend, who is teeny tiny, moving her hips like she was a force to be reckoned with!
Who are the people who come to class? They are students who become friends. They get themselves certified. They jokingly call our Sunday class “Church of Zumba.” They are neighbors who ask me to show them a difficult move outside of class and then ROCK it at the next one! They are mothers and daughters. Husbands and wives who laugh and smile and practice at home! They are high school girls. They are senior citizens. They are little girls who force their moms out of bed so they can come to class and watch/participate! They are guys who are intrigued & want to give it a try. They are guys who promised their daughters and wives they would try it. They are sisters. They are girlfriends. They are women who get together & dance at home. They are all my inspiration.
Last Wednesday one of my regular student’s mom came to class. I think it was her 4th time. She is in her late 70s. She signed up for a membership right after class. She told me this: “I love your class. I love your smile. No matter what I’m doing, keeping up or not, all I have to do is look up and see your smiling face and I am so happy.” That is EXACTLY how I feel when I see my students smiling! No matter what is going on in my life, how I’m feeling emotionally or physically, ALL I have to do is look and see ONE smile and I am elated.
I’m so thankful for Zumba and all it does for people. Fitness, weight loss, emotional release, friendship, fun, joy.
The one thing I will say to those people who say “I can’t dance” All you have to do is try. Unlock your mind. Let yourself go. And try again. And smile.
Have you gone to a Zumba Class? What do you love about it?
What fills your soul? What’s your passion?

Here are some tips from a Zumba fanatic! (me)
1. Try different instructors until you find one you click with. Everyone has slightly different styles.
2. Go 3 times to one instructor’s class. You will get to know the songs and style of the class & will be able to let yourself go a little bit more each time.
3. Let yourself go! Nobody is watching or judging you. They are all watching the instructor’s feet!
4. I read this in Z-Life Magazine: “Unlock your mind and your body will follow.”
5. Have fun with your Zumba Fitness clothes! Zumba.com has fun, fun styles! Wear a funky hairstyle! Fun socks! Anything that makes you happy.
6. Bring your significant other to class! You’ll have a blast together!
7. Remember the chorus of a new song. It repeats.
8. Get ready to watch the pounds melt away! You can burn up to 1000 calories in a class!
9. Get Certified to teach! I learned SO much and met so many great people. If you get certified – you should definitely sign up to be in the Zumba Instructor Network!
10. FEEL the MUSIC! If there is something you don’t like or understand just dance! It’s all about hearing the music & feeling the music.
Last but not least, come to my class!

In early October I received an email that sent my heart pounding! I was invited to perform at the Utah Jazz game at halftime! I was probably the first to sign up & couldn’t type my “YES!” fast enough!
I was a cheerleader & dancer growing up. I LOVED everything about performing on a basketball court! The sound of the sneakers squeaking on the wood floor, the sound of the music booming in any gym we happened to be in at the time, looking up & seeing my friends and family watching with pride, feeling my soul pour out of me.
I loved the preparation. Putting on the uniform, getting on a bus if necessary, cranking up the music to prepare, practicing, practicing, practicing.
To go through theses things again several years later, brought back such great feelings. My husband said to me “To see you in your element again was amazing!” Boy was he right!
A girlfriend once said to me, “There is nothing like character shoes on a wood floor.” She was a dancer & cheerleader as well & “gets it.” Performing is in my blood and I LOVE every minute of it. The nerves. Oh the nerves! It’s all part of it & I’ll take it.
I arrived to practice at 1:30pm. Watching the Zumba girls pour in all “Zumbafied” in their 80’s looking ZumbaWear was so, so fun for me! I met a girl from Wyoming named Frankie & we swapped stories about our kid’s & tonsils. So different that a college girl swapping stories about their boyfriend coming down for a campus visit or finals!
Frankie was one of 60 girls that I met that day. I was blown away by their talent & their kindness. Lindsey Taylor, Utah’s own Zumba Celebrity, lead us through a productive practice & we had a GREAT performance!
It was clear to me that I was the newborn Zumba gal in the group. I have been teaching for a few months & loving it yet I was in the presence of people who danced with Beto – the genius behind Zumba. It was awe-inspiring! The GREAT thing about it was that these girls were not unapproachable. They took me in, gave me tips, cut my clothing to look Zumbalicious and became life long friends.
Periodically I would peek out into the stands from the “tunnel” where the Jazz players enter & exit. I would jump up & down and wave to my 5 year old boy who thought it was the coolest thing ever!
When it was time for us to perform, the adrenaline kicked in & it was JUST like being in college again! My husband kept asking me, “Do you realize how big this is?” My response at first was “No. It just feels like cheerleading days again.” Then I stepped onto the court. Wow. It was so much fun!
When I would dance to one side I’d see my husband & daughter. When I would turn to my right there were four friends in the 4th row cheering & waving. Half way through the song my 5-year-old had made his way on the court & was laughing and cheering in a way that said “Am I in trouble for being on the court? Can I celebrate this?” And indeed he did! He was so, so cute!
Looking back on the video it is easy for me to pick apart my spaghetti arms, my outfit or how the camera does add at least 10lbs..but I won’t. Nothing will overshadow that moment and that day. I loved it so much.
I encourage you to find your passion & live through it!

The program is designed to assist children ages 5 through 12 who are experiencing social skill deficiencies due to mental illness and are emotionally challenged. The goal of each staff member in the program is to provide a positive environment where children can feel accepted, confident, and successful while at the same time gain social skills in areas such as anger management, compliance, honesty, and getting along with others.
I’m currently working with these children for my internship at Wasatch Mental Health. These children are have so much to teach us! Though they lack the simple skills that we take for granted daily, their laughter and desire to be treated like a normal human being is enough for me to to encourage you all to ZUMBA and donate some money towards this program.
